Barcelona continues to retreat and surprisingly loses to Antwerp in the Champions League

Updated: Dec 14, 2023

Barcelona lost in the last match in the group stage

Barcelona failed to compensate its fans for the defeat against Girona, and lost in a strange way to Antwerp 3-2, in the last round of the Champions League groups.

As is usual for Barca this season, the Catalan club conceded an early goal in the second minute through Arthur Firmin, then Ferran Torres equalized for the Catalan club in the 35th minute.

In the second half, Antwerp came back and took the lead again in the 56th minute through Vincent Janssen, but youngster Marc Guyot succeeded in equalizing in the 91st minute.

The strange thing is that after this draw, everyone thought the match was over, but George Ilnykhina scored the winning goal for the hosts in the 92nd minute.

This win is Antwerp's first win in the Champions League this season, having lost all five of its other group matches.

Barca fans were hoping for a strong reaction from Xavi Hernandez's squad to Girona's 4-2 defeat last Sunday, but the level shown by the Blaugrana substitutes was extremely disappointing.

In the same group, Porto won 5-3 over Shakhtar, thus accompanying Barcelona to the round of 16, but in second place.

It remains to be noted that this defeat against Antwerp deprives Barcelona of earning approximately 3 million euros, which would have refreshed the Blaugrana reservoir and helped it in light of the stifling economic crisis.
