Girona coach Mitchel Sanchez stressed that his team had achieved the most important goal of beating Barcelona by passing the 40th point and ensuring their survival in the Spanish League next season.
Girona won a mini-Catalan derby over Barcelona 4-2, and with it was alone at the top of the La Liga standings with 41 points, and instead of Mitchell seeing this as an opportunity to compete for the title, he spoke realistically that his team’s goal was to ensure survival.
The coach said in statements to the media after the match, "Are we going to compete for the title? I don't know if we can compete with Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. Winning the league is not our goal."
He also added, "We can now clearly announce that we have achieved our first goal this season. Girona will not be relegated to the second division."
At the same time, Sanchez expressed his pride in Girona's performance against Barcelona, and continued, "I am more happy with the mentality than the result. You can see that Barcelona had the advantage many times, but Girona was always present."
He concluded, "We are truly making history. We can now beat any opponent in Spain. I am really proud of what is happening."
Girona suffered only one defeat, which was at the hands of Real Madrid with a score of 3-0. Other than that, it succeeded in outperforming all of its peers.
It is noteworthy that over the course of the entire last season, Girona achieved 49 points, placing it tenth in La Liga, and now, after 16 rounds, it has 41 points and leads the competition standings.
