Money deprives Barcelona of the "new Messi" and this is his closest destination!

Updated: Dec 27, 2023

Claudio Echeverri

Famous journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Claudio Echeverri is closer to joining Manchester City, in light of the English club's desperate attempts to finalize the deal during the next few weeks.

The Argentine player had previously announced that he would not renew his contract with River Plate, which extends until the end of 2024, opening the door to his departure next January or summer at the latest.

According to Romano, Barcelona was one of the most interested in the “new Messi,” but the stifling financial crisis and inability to fulfill the rules of fair financial play prevented it from contracting with the 17-year-old.

On the other hand, Manchester City's attempts to convince Echeverri to join him do not stop, and it seems that all parties are close to reaching an agreement on the player's transfer to Etihad Stadium.

Any club can buy Echeverri's contract only for an amount ranging from 25 to 30 million euros, which is the value of the release clause in his contract with River Plate.

Chelsea also appears as one of the clubs interested in Echeverri, but City is the most serious, as well as Real Madrid. However, the Royal Club's priorities are different at the present moment in light of the search for a defender to support the team with in January.

Echeverri is seen as the "successor to Messi" or the "new Messi" after his amazing performances in the Junior World Cup with Argentina, most notably scoring a super hat-trick against Brazil in the quarter-finals.
