Surprise: Raul may face Real Madrid as coach in the Champions League!

Raul Gonzalez, former Real Madrid player

The German newspaper "Bild" reported that Raul Gonzalez, coach of Real Madrid Castilla, is at the top of the list of candidates to coach Union Berlin in the coming period.

The German club dismissed its historic coach, Urs Fischer, in light of the decline in results this season, after achieving only two wins in the first 12 rounds of the German League and placing at the bottom of the Bundesliga standings, bidding farewell to the German Cup and modest participation in the Champions League.

The capital club is looking for a replacement for Fisher, and initially chose 3 names.

The first name is Raul, in a repeat of Bayer Leverkusen's experience in signing a former Spanish player who appears promising as a coach, especially since the Real Madrid legend is progressing very positively with the Castilla team, which made him a candidate to coach the first team after Carlo Ancelotti.

Raul played 145 matches with Real Madrid Castilla, during which he won 61 matches, lost 40 and tied 44. He also won the UEFA Youth Champions League title in 2019.

Raul is competing with former Barcelona assistant coach Alfred Schroeder, who has just left the Emirati club Al Ain, and has good experience in the Bundesliga after coaching Hoffenheim, in addition to his great experience in the Netherlands with Ajax last season.

The third name is the most experienced in Germany, and it is Oliver Glasner, the Eintracht Frankfurt coach who led the Eagles to the European League title two seasons ago, and who had also previously coached Wolfsburg.

The name of Union's permanent successor is scheduled to be decided within the next few hours, and shares lean more toward Raul or Schroeder, according to "Bild."

If Raul takes over as coach of the German club, one of his first matches in the German capital will be facing his former team, Real Madrid, at the end of the group stage of the Champions League.

It is noteworthy that Schalke tried to sign Raul after he fired his coach, Thomas Reis, but the Spaniard preferred to continue with Castilla over training in the German second division.
