The RMC network reported that the public prosecutor in Nice demanded a 10-month prison sentence be imposed on Algerian Youssef Atal along with a fine of 45,000 euros on charges of anti-Semitism.

Atal had posted a video on his Instagram account in which he supported the Palestinian cause and denounced the war on Gaza.

After that, the player was arrested upon his return to France on charges of broadcasting speeches that contribute to inciting hatred, before paying bail of 80,000 euros and being released.

Atal appeared in court on Monday and said that the video he posted was a “message of peace” and that people were suffering greatly in the war.

However, the public prosecutor demanded a heavy penalty against the current Nice player, while the court decided to postpone the ruling in the case until next January 3.

Atal is still suspended indefinitely by his club Nice, however, coach Djamel Belmadi is expected to summon him to the African Cup of Nations next January.
