UEFA President to Real Madrid and Barcelona: Congratulations on the “Zombie League”

Updated: Dec 23, 2023

Aleksander Ceferin, President of UEFA

Aleksander Ceferin, President of the European Football Association, mocked the feeling of victory among the Real Madrid and Barcelona administrations after the European Court of Justice’s decision regarding the European Super League, calling the newly created competition a “zombie league.”

The European Court of Justice recognized the right of clubs to establish the European Super League, and condemned UEFA's threat of sanctions, which encourages many clubs to participate in the new competition.

Ceferin spoke to the media after this historic ruling, saying, "We will not try to stop them. They can establish any championship they want without a problem."

He added sarcastically, "I hope they start their big competition as soon as possible with only two teams participating."

"Football is not for sale," he continued.

“I read in the English newspapers that fans call this tournament the Zombie League. I liked the name.”

He concluded, "We are close to the Christmas period, and they saw a box under the tree and began to celebrate, but when they opened the box they realized that there was nothing inside it."

It is noteworthy that only Real Madrid and Barcelona are the two remaining teams out of the 12 teams that established the European Super League, as all other teams withdrew after many local and continental pressures.
