Union Berlin backs down from appointing Raul as head coach

Union Berlin has decided to sign Croatian Nenad Bjelica to succeed Urs Fischer as coach of the German club.

The name of Raul Gonzalez, coach of Real Madrid Castilla, was heavily discussed in the past hours to take over the coach of the capital club.

According to the Kicker newspaper, Raul was close to coaching Onion, and as of Saturday evening, he was close to taking charge of the team.

But all German sources agreed on Sunday evening that Onyon had decided to sign Nenad Bjelica, and had reached an agreement with the Croatian that the matter would be officially announced within the next few hours.

Bjelica has a distinguished coaching career, as he worked with Italian Spezia, Polish Lech Poznań, and Croatian Dinamo Zagreb.

His last experience was coaching Trabzonspor in Turkey, before he left after only 8 rounds of the start of the league this season.

The 52-year-old coach's achievements include winning the Croatian League twice, the Austrian Second Division and the Croatian Cup once.

It seems that the coaching experience factors favored Bjelica over Raul, who has only worked within Real Madrid’s youth sector for the last 4 years.

It is noteworthy that Union Berlin occupies the penultimate place in the German League, and is also at the bottom of its group in the Champions League, in addition to being eliminated from the German Cup in the round of 16.
