An obscure Greek player beats Messi in the MLS and wins an award over him!

A few days after winning the eighth Ballon d'Or, Lionel Messi lost the MLS newcomer of the Year award despite his impressive brilliance with Inter Miami.

Since joining the American club last summer, Messi has succeeded in leading his team to the first title in history "League Cup" as well as scoring 10 goals in it, and 3 goals in the American League Championship.

Despite the outstanding numbers, the efforts of the "flea" did not succeed in leading Inter Miami to the final qualifiers through which the identity of the MLS champions is decided

On the other hand, a Greek player named Giorgos Giakoumakis scored 17 goals for Atalanta United, and led his team to the final qualifiers after finishing sixth.

That was enough for the 28-year-old to win the MLS newcomer Player of the Year award and beat what analysts considered the favourite, Lionel Messi.

Giorgos Giakoumakis played for several clubs within Greece, most notably AEK Athens, and the biggest club in his career was Celtic of Scotland, from which he moved except Atalanta United in the winter of 2023.

It is noteworthy that Messi's season with Inter Miami has ended with the failure of crossing to the qualifiers, with the new season to start next March.
