English press reports circulated Newcastle United's interest in signing former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea in a free transfer deal during the upcoming winter transfer period.

Maccabees' main goalkeeper, Nick Pope, was injured during Newcastle's 1-0 win over Manchester United last Saturday at St. James' Park.

According to the English club, Pope will be away for a long period of time, perhaps up to 4 months, after he was diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder that requires surgical intervention.

Newcastle began studying the names available to replace Pope, and according to the Daily Mail, De Gea's name has become the most likely, given the Spaniard's extensive experience in the English Premier League and his exceptional abilities, most notably with the Red Devils.

Since De Gea's contract with United expired last summer and he has not joined a new club, the Saudi League is still interested in including him, but what is clear is the player's desire to remain in Europe in the next period of his career.

Real Betis' name had been floated as a possible destination for De Gea, and now Newcastle are closer than ever to signing the 32-year-old, especially after the player welcomed a huge salary cut of £375,000 per week in order to join Eddie Howe's squad.

It is noteworthy that De Gea played for 11 years with Manchester United, during which he succeeded in winning the English Premier League once, and won the Golden Glove Award twice, but his level in the last two seasons declined severely, so Erik ten Hag decided to oust him and include Andre Onana instead.
