Mainz terminates Anwar El Ghazi’s contract days after his inclusion due to Palestine

The German club Mainz announced the termination of its contract with the Dutch player of Moroccan origin, Anwar El Ghazi, against the backdrop of a “story” on his Instagram account in which he supported Palestine.

Al-Ghazi joined Mainz less than a month ago, specifically on September 22, in a free transfer deal after finishing with PSV Eindhoven, where he played only 3 matches with his German club, during which he succeeded in scoring one goal.

After the recent events in Gaza, Al-Ghazi, who has Arab origins, published a “story” on Instagram in which he declared his support for Palestine.

Hours later, Al-Ghazi was subjected to an investigation by the club’s management, which accused him that the statements included in the story were “anti-Semitic.”

Accordingly, Mainz issued an official statement announcing the termination of the contract with the 28-year-old player.

The statement came as follows:

Anwar El Ghazi has taken a position on the conflict in the Middle East in a way that is unsustainable for Al Naji. The decision was taken after a discussion between the board of directors and the player.

Mainz respects different viewpoints on the complex conflict in the Middle East that has been going on for decades, however the club distances itself from the content of the post because it does not match the values of our club.
