Ramos enters the history of the Champions League from its widest doors

Updated: Dec 13, 2023

The moment Ramos was injured and Sevilla bid farewell to the Champions League

Although Sevilla bid farewell to the Champions League, Sergio Ramos reserved a place for himself in the history of the Champions League with his goal from a Panenka-style penalty kick, during the Andalusian club’s 2-1 defeat by French club Lens.

Sevilla collected only two points in its group, placing it at the bottom of the standings, and even lost the chance to relegate to its favorite tournament, the Europa League, while Arsenal and Eindhoven qualified for the round of 16 and Lens went to the Europa League.

But Ramos' goal made him break up the partnership with Roberto Carlos and Gerard Pique and become the highest-scoring defender in the history of the Champions League, with 17 goals.

Meanwhile, Ramos became the eighth most capped player in the Champions League with 142 appearances.

It remains to be noted that Ramos scored a goal in the last match with PSV Eindhoven, which witnessed the Dutch club's remontada in the heart of the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, which was the nucleus of Sevilla's farewell to the competition.

The Spanish international had won the Champions League title with Real Madrid 4 previous times, before leaving in 2021 to Paris Saint-Germain, and two years later he moved for free to his parent club, Sevilla.

Sevilla is experiencing a state of decline at all levels this season, as it occupies 16th place with only 13 points after 16 rounds in La Liga.
