The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) published the lists of clubs participating in the 2023 Club World Cup competition, which is scheduled to be held in the city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and witnessed a big surprise regarding Al-Ahly’s squad.
The Egyptian club will participate in the competition starting in the quarter-finals, awaiting the winner of the first round match between the host Jeddah Union and Auckland City, the champion of the Oceania continent.
Coach Marcel Koller excluded Salah Mohsen from Al-Ahly’squad s participating in the Club World Cup, despite relying on him heavily in the last two months.
But it seems that the failure of the former Enppi player to provide the desired performance, and his scoring of a single goal throughout the current season, which was against Medeama in the African Champions League, did not convince Kohler of the usefulness of the striker’s presence on the Saudi trip.
The second name excluded is Ahmed Abdel Qader, but this decision is not surprising given the tension in the relationship between the player and Koller over the past months.
On the other hand, the Swiss coach included French striker Anthony Modeste despite his injury and the severe criticism he was subjected to.
In addition to Modeste, Al-Ahly’s roster included midfielder Amr El-Soulia, who recently returned from injury and succeeded in gradually entering the Red Giants’ formation, even if as a substitute.
Mohamed Abdel Moneim is also on Al-Ahly’s list despite his recent ankle sprain, which may prevent him from participating in the first match of the World Cup, although there is great optimism that the brilliant defender will recover in the necessary time.
It should be noted that Koller also excluded Mahmoud Metwally, Mohamed Al-Dawy “Christo” and Karim Walid from the list traveling to Jeddah.
