Updated: Dec 7, 2023

Carlos Queiroz departs from coaching Qatar

Carlos Queiroz is negotiating with the Qatar Football Association to terminate the contract between the two parties by mutual consent, in light of the Portuguese coach’s desire to leave his position as coach of Al-Annabi.

The task of coaching the Qatari national team was assigned to Queiroz last April, succeeding Spanish coach Felix Sanchez, with a contract extended until 2026, with the aim of getting “Al-Adam” to the World Cup again.

According to the Portuguese newspaper "Record", the coach has so far failed to harmonize with Qatar, and the recent results and disappointing performance were all a reason for both parties to see the need to disengage before the Asian Cup scheduled to be held in January 2024 in Doha.

Queiroz did not succeed in convincing the Qataris of the team’s standards during its participation in the Gold Cup, and then defeats in friendly matches, such as 4-0 against Iran in the friendly tournament in Jordan, as well as a 1-1 draw with Russia, confirmed that things were not going well inside.” Burgundy.

Queiroz, 70 years old, led the Qatar national team in 12 official and friendly matches, winning 5 of them, the last of which was two matches in the World Cup qualifiers against Afghanistan and India, and was defeated in the same number of matches, while drawing two matches.

According to Qatari press reports, the Qatari Federation will appoint Spaniard Marcos Lopez, the current coach of Al Wakrah, as interim coach during the Asian Cup period, given his long experience in Qatari stadiums, which extends for 6 years in the Stars League.

It is noteworthy that the Qatar national team will open its campaign in the Asian Cup by facing Lebanon on January 12, 2024 at Lusail Stadium, in its group that also includes the teams of China and Tajikistan.

It remains to be noted that Queiroz has long experience in leading national teams, and his most prominent experience was with Iran after he led them twice to the World Cup (2014 and 2018). He also coached the Egyptian national team and brought it to the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and almost took it to the 2022 World Cup, which He coached the Iranian national team again.
