FIFA creates the Intercontinental Cup

FIFA announced that the 2023 Club World Cup will be the last with its traditional system known since 2005.

The competition was held with the participation of 6 clubs, before the number rose to 7, in one country with a knockout system, and the champion of South America and Europe participated starting in the semi-finals.

But FIFA decided to replace the current system by creating a new tournament called the Intercontinental Cup, which will be held in 3 stages.

The first stage is divided into two rounds. In the first round, the champion of Africa or Asia (determined by a draw) will face the champion of Oceania in a single match on the stadium of one of them, and the winner of this match will face the remaining team.

As for the second stage, the North American champion plays the South American champion on one of the stadiums (determined by a draw).

In the third stage, the winner of the first stage will meet the winner of the second stage on a neutral stadium on December 14, 2024.

The winner of the third stage will meet the 2023-2024 Champions League champion on the same neutral field in the Intercontinental Cup final.

Meanwhile, the Club World Cup will be held with a new system of 32 clubs every 4 years, starting in 2025 in America.

On this basis, the Intercontinental Cup matches will be played annually except in the years of the new Club World Cup.
