Hours after he was linked to coaching Zamalek, Peseiro failed miserably with Nigeria

Nigeria failed to win for the second consecutive match in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, after drawing 1-1 with Zimbabwe.

Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro is coaching the Nigerian national team, and in recent days Egyptian media said that he is a strong candidate to coach Zamalek, succeeding Colombian Juan Carlos Osorio.

The Eagles had a very miserable start to the qualifiers with a 1-1 draw with Lesotho in Nigeria, then the disappointment continued with a draw on Sunday with Zimbabwe with the same score.

The Nigerian national team includes distinguished names, even as it is the most expensive team in terms of marketing in Africa. Its attack line is led by Victor Osimhen, the top scorer in the Italian League, and Victor Boniface, one of the top scorers in the German League, in addition to the presence of Iwobi, Ihancho, Collins, and other major stars.

However, Nigeria collected only 2 points from 6 available in the group, and South Africa leads their group with 3 points until their match this round with Uganda.

In light of these stumbles, Peseiro may write his end as coach of the Nigerian national team, as he took over as coach in May 2022, but he only won 6 matches, lost 5, and tied in two matches.

The question remains whether Peseiro will move to Zamalek if he is ousted from Nigeria, after it was reported that the negotiations between him and the White Club had reached advanced stages.

It is noteworthy that Peseiro took over coaching Al-Ahly in 2015 and won the Egyptian League title with them. He also supervised the training of major teams such as Porto and Sporting Lisbon. His last experience before Nigeria was coaching the Venezuelan national team, but he was dismissed due to poor results.

It is also worth noting that Zamalek did not appoint a permanent coach after Osorio’s dismissal, and Motamed Gamal is still taking over the job temporarily, while many possible names have been put forward to succeed the Colombian, such as German Franko Foda and finally Peseiro.
