Sundowns beat Wydad and win the 2023 African League title

South African Sundowns players celebrate their victory over Wydad

Sundowns beat Wydad 2-0 at Loftus Versfeld stadium in the second leg of the 2023 African League final and won the title for the first time in their history.

The Moroccan club won the first leg in Casablanca 2-1, but the South African club won the second leg to make the two games on aggregate 3-2 in favor of Sundowns.

Makwina's men took the lead in the final minute of the first half through Peter Chaluweli, before Modiba put the second goal in the 53rd minute.

Wydad tried to comeback and needed one goal in order to go to the penalty shootout, but the attempts of Adel Ramzi's men were unsuccessful.

With this victory, Sundowns achieves the first edition of the new African League competition, earning $4 million in prize winning the title, compared to $2 million for runners-up Wydad.

Sundowns passed Petro Atletico in the quarterfinals, then crossed Egypt's Al Ahly in the semi-finals.

This is the third continental tournament in Sundowns' history, having won the CAF Champions League in 2016 and then won the CAF Super Cup for the same year, after which it missed out on the African podiums.

This victory could be a "untying of the knot" of Sundowns for Wydad, as the Moroccan club three times eliminated the yellow club from the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the CAF Champions League.
