Victor Osimhen, the Napoli player, won the 2023 African Player of the Year award, at the ceremony held in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh.
The Nigerian international competed with Mohamed Salah, the Liverpool star, and Achraf Hakimi, the Paris Saint-Germain star, but his overall performance gave him the award for the first time in his career.
Osimhen succeeded in leading Napoli to their first Italian league title since 1990, and he was also the top scorer for Calcio last season.
The award is given for the players’ overall performance between November 2022 and September 2023.
During that period, Osimhen played 41 matches in all tournaments, during which he scored 33 goals and assisted 5 more.
On the other hand, Achraf Hakimi won the French League title with Paris Saint-Germain, led Morocco to the World Cup semi-finals, scored 6 goals and made 6 assists in 41 matches in all tournaments.
As for Mohamed Salah, he did not win any trophies with Liverpool, but he scored 24 goals and assisted 19 others in 46 matches in all tournaments.
