Mohamed El-Shenawy played a major role in Al-Ahly achieving a huge victory over Al-Ittihad 3-1, after he saved Karim Benzema’s penalty kick at the end of the first half.
The result at the time indicated that the Red Giants were ahead by one goal without a response, and if Benzema had scored an equalizer, the match scenario would have been turned upside down.
After the match, El-Shenawy spoke to the SSC channel about how he saved the French football legend’s penalty kick, saying, “Benzema’s memory and the way he takes penalty kicks. He is always the one who takes them. I succeeded in saving it, and I think it was an important turning point in the match.”
Al-Ahly sets a date with Fluminense in the semi-finals of the Club World Cup, and regarding this, the Egyptian club captain said, “We will celebrate today and close the Al-Ittihad match page from tomorrow to focus on the Fluminense match.”
He concluded, "Al-Ahly enters any tournament in order to achieve it, and our confidence has not been shaken even for a moment in our ability to win against Al-Ittihad."
It is noteworthy that this is the second penalty kick that El-Shenawy has saved in the Club World Cup, after he saved a penalty kick by Luka Modric in the 2022 World Cup in Morocco during the Al-Ahly and Real Madrid match.
