Wydad managed to achieve a valuable victory over Esperance with a clean goal, in the match that was held at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in the first leg of the semi-finals of the 2023 African League.
Things before the match were tense after Esperance fans claimed they had been assaulted by Wydad fans on the streets of Casablanca, and the Tunisian club published an official statement condemning the incident.
In the end, the match was held on time and Wydad managed to achieve victory thanks to Hicham Bousfiane's goal in the 58th minute.
Now Esperance will have to do another comeback like the one they did against TP Mazembe in the quarter-finals when they lost the first leg 1-0 and managed to return the second leg in Rades with a clean treble.
The second leg will be held at the International Stadium Hamadi Aqrabi next Wednesday at four pm local time for Tunisia and Morocco, fifth Egypt time.
The winner of the Wydad and Esperance clash will face the winner of the match between Al Ahly and Sundowns in the final, and the South African club had won at home by an unanswered goal earlier on Sunday evening.
